If you go down to the woods today you’re sure for a big surprise….
If you go down to the woods today you might just win a prize!!
Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day takes place annually on the 10th July all over the world, and this year we’re marking the occasion by running a very special personalised baby gift set giveaway right here on the blog.
How did Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day start?
The idea of the Teddy Bears’ Picnic originally came from a song, penned back in 1907 by the American composer John Walter Bratton. Originally Teddy Bears’ Picnic was an instrumental piece, but the lyrics were written and added later by Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy in 1932.
The first vocal recording was made the same year by Henry Hall and his BBC Orchestra, featuring Val Rosing on vocals. The song has subsequently been recorded by numerous famous artists over the years, including Bing Crosby, Jerry Garcia (of the Grateful Dead), John Inman, and Anne Murray; cementing its popularity as a children’s classic.
Things to do this Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day
The best way to celebrate Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day is, of course, to hold or attend a Teddy Bears’ Picnic!
Lots of places still hold an annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic, though they don’t always take place on the 10th of July! The National Trust is a great place to find out if there’s a Teddy Bears’ Picnic happening near you this summer.
If there’s nothing happening in your area, why not hold one at home in the garden with the kids, or organise your own at the local parks? All you need is a few blankets, a picnic, some friends and your children’s favourite teddy companions!
Of course, Teddy Bears’ Picnics aren’t just for the kids either… who fancies a trip down memory lane?
